A roll of aluminium foil tape is one of those small things that makes a big difference to a professional-looking, properly finished van build. Use it to seal the joins in your insulation, lag your pipework and patch any nicks or tears, so you're left with a neat, continuous finish behind your lining.

Why use foil tape in your van?

If you're using foil-faced insulation, every join and cut edge is a gap. Taping the seams gives you a continuous reflective surface, helps keep warmth in during winter and heat out in summer, and stops your insulation lifting or peeling as you work.

It's also handy for wrapping pipes and heater ducting, and for covering off any damaged areas of foil. It's flexible enough to mould around awkward corners and uneven surfaces, and the strong acrylic adhesive bonds to metal, wood, glass, plastics and foam.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I get the best finish?
Wipe the surface clean and dry first, then peel back the backing a little at a time as you go rather than exposing the whole length. Press down firmly and rub the edges flat with your fingers or a flat tool to remove air bubbles and activate the adhesive. Working in short sections stops the foil crinkling.

Where should I use it?
Insulation seams, foil-faced panels, pipework and ducting are ideal. It's not a sealant, so it won't replace butyl tape or seam sealer on roof or bodywork joins.

Can I use it near my heater?
The tape is rated to +70°C, so keep it away from exhausts, flues and any part of a heater that runs hotter than that. It's fine on the cooler warm-air ducting runs, but check your heater's fitting instructions first.

Is this the same as HVAC tape?
Yes. "Foil tape", "aluminium tape" and "HVAC tape" are all the same thing. This is the same tape used by heating and ventilation installers, just sold in a size that suits a van conversion.

How much do I need?
For most vans, one roll covers all your insulation seams and pipework with plenty to spare. Only tape the joins that need it, and there's no need to cover whole panels.
